About this leaderboard

This is the one leaderboard where leading is not a compliment. Dismissals reflect era as much as temperament — refereeing standards, the tackles tolerated in the 1990s and the introduction of video review have all moved the baseline, so players from different periods are not really being compared on equal terms.

For play, red cards are the most useful small-number metric on the site. Totals run from single figures into the twenties rather than the hundreds, which puts almost the entire board inside the finishing range. If you need 11, this is where you look.

Play it in 501FC

501FC turns these stats into a daily football darts puzzle. Start on 501, name footballers, and subtract their career numbers to check out to zero.
