How the daily challenge works
Every day at midnight London time, 501FC posts three new fixtures — one easy, one medium, one hard. Each is a game of football darts: you start on 501 and bring the score down to exactly zero by naming footballers and spending their career statistics as darts. Everyone plays the same three categories on the same day, so the leaderboard above is a like-for-like race rather than a high-score table.
Naming a player, throwing a dart
The day's category sets who is eligible — for example players who appeared for Everton, scored against a particular metric such as Premier League assists. Name any footballer who fits, and their total for that metric is subtracted from your score. A winger with 74 assists is a big dart early on; a defender with three is the kind of small, precise throw that finishes a leg.
Two rules decide the leg. Go past zero and you bust — the throw is void and your score returns to what it was before it. Land on exactly zero and you check out, and your turn count goes to the leaderboard. Fewer turns is better, so the skill is not simply knowing footballers: it is choosing which of a player's numbers to spend, and leaving yourself a total you can actually finish from. Scores that cannot be checked out in one throw are known as bogey numbers, and steering around them is most of the advanced game.
The three difficulties
Easy draws on broad, familiar categories where plenty of well-known names qualify and the numbers are generous. Medium narrows the eligible pool — you will need more than the obvious handful of players. Hard combines a tight category with a metric where the useful values are scarce, so the finish has to be planned several throws out. Completing all three marks the day done and extends your streak; miss a day and the streak resets, but your best is kept.
Where the numbers come from
Every stat is a career league total from the 501FC corpus — domestic league competition only, so cup and continental appearances are not counted. That is why a player's total here can differ from the figure on a club website or a broadcast graphic, which usually counts all competitions. We wrote about why those sources disagree, and which number is the right one to trust, in why football stats disagree.
